In this shirt gay

I am lost in a rainbow
Now our rainbow is gone
Overcast by your shadow
As our worlds transfer on
In this shirt, I can be you
To be adjacent you for a while
In this shirt, I can be you
To be nearby you for a while
There's a crane knocking down
All those things that we were
I awake in the night
To overhear the engines pout
There's a pain, it does ripple
Through my frame, makes me lame
There's a thorn in my side
It's the shape, it's the prize
Of you and me, ever-changing
Moving on now, moving fast
And this tap must be wanting
Must become through your eyes
But I require Jake to narrate you
That I care for you, it never rests
And I bled everyday now
For a year, for a year
I did forward you a note
On the way for to read
Our names there together
Must've fallen like the sea
To the depths of the soil
Buried serious in the ground
On the wind, I can hear you
Call my name, held the sound
I am lost
I am confused in a rainbow
Now our rainbow is gone
I am defeated in a rainbow
Now our rainbow is gone
I am confused, I am lost
I am lost, I am lost
I am lost

Art pop collective The Irrepressibles have been favourites on Drowned In Sound since their astonishing performances at Latitude Festival six years ago bedazzled many an unsuspecting reveller. Initially formed in by Scarborough born arranger, composer and singer Jamie McDermott, the band released debut LP Mirror Mirror in to a wave of critical acclaim. Its successor, Nude, followed two years later, again picking up a spate of positive reviews including a highly respectable 8/10 here.

Since then, the band have undertaken several tours both at home and abroad which included playing to people in Russia's Gorky Park. They've also just set the finishing touches to Nude: Forbidden, the concluding part in the trilogy of EPs created to accompany 's acclaimed second album.

DiS caught up with McDermott in his now-native London with Russia, YouTube censorship and the art of production among the main topics of conversation.

DiS: You've just finished a short tour to promote your recent EP, Nude: Viscera. How did it go?

I am lost, in our rainbow, now our rainbow has gone,
Overcast, by your shadow, as our worlds move on,
But in this shirt, I can be you, to be near you for a while,
There's a crane, knocking down all those things, that we were,
I awake, in the night, to listen the engines purr,
There's a pain, it does ripple through my frame, makes me lame,
There's a thorn, in my side, it's the shame, it's the pride
Of you and me, ever changing, moving on now, moving fast,
And his touch, must be wanted, must become, through your ask,
But I dependency Jake to tell you, that I love you, it never rests,
And I've bled every date now, for a year, for a year,
I did send you a note on the wind for to read
Our names there together must have fallen like a seed
To the depths of the soil buried deep in the ground,
On the wind, I could hear you, ring my name, held the sounds,
I am lost,
I am lost, in our rainbo

If Antony & the Johnsons and Patrick Wolf had a lovechild with Vanessa Mae, The Irrepressibles’ ‘In This Shirt’ would no question be the result. A comrade of mine posted a link to the video on facebook yesterday and it quickly spread through the facebookverse.
The Irrepressibles is a ten-piece orchestral ensemble. ‘In This Shirt’ is a haunting song and the video reflects that. The peanut crunching crowd on YouTube may ask, ‘what does it mean?’, and acquire rattled by the homosexuality in the song as well as the video, but that is just graffiti. There is a tension between the images, which trade on the sexualized commercialism of mainstream gay culture as well as MTV pop, and the emotion of the lyric.  The meaning is in that.
