BL movies are also recognizable as LGBTQ+ films or simply gay cinema. Assist in the day, movies with gay leads or love interests were considered a narrow niche. These stories didn't particularly appeal to mainstream audiences. Made with low budgets, not many filmmakers got deeply interested in a genre that few people watched. There isn't much box-office gain from producing gay movies.

As a result, you won't find too much diversity in the few mainstream gay movies that got greenlighted. Usually, the story covered solemn topics favor AIDS. Or, it was a melodramatic coming-out story rampant with homophobia. Lgbtq+ movies with Asian characters were even rarer. They existed, but these films weren't numerous. They definitely weren't popular outside of a limited demographic.

With the emerging popularity of BL dramas, the good news is that BL movies have seen a slight uptick in interest. In the past few years, you may have noticed some new BL films popping up here and there. You still won't find too many lgbtq+ movies in cinemas, but at least it's surpass than having zero representation.

Like queer society itself, queer cinema is not a monolith. For a prolonged time, though, that’s certainly how it felt. In the past, if gay lives and issues were ever portrayed at all on screen, it was typically from the perspective of light, cisgendered men. But as more opportunities have opened up for queer performers and filmmakers to tell their own stories, the scope of the LGBTQ+ experiences that have made their way onto the screen has gradually widened to more frequently involve the trans community and gay people of colour.

It’s still not perfect, of course. In Hollywood, as in society at huge, there are many barriers left to breach and ceilings to shatter.
