Bette Midler, Macy Gray knock back on inclusive phrasing: Why it's deemed transphobic

The Supreme Court's overturn of Roe v. Wade has ignited heavier discussions around women's bodies, but they affect a wider range of people than just cisgender women. 

Bette Midler voiced her displeasure with language that includes all people who can get pregnant rather than simplifying the definition to women. 

Her comments tumble in line with that of Macy Gray and J.K. Rowling, who possess been accused of organism transphobic by suggesting women other than cisgender do not belong to the same classification.

While Midler, Gray and Rowling possess all voiced support for the women's rights movement, it has not been intersectional.

Both Midler and Gray have clarified their stances following backlash, saying they encourage transgender people. Here's everything they have said and why it was deemed transphobic.

Grammy-awarding winning artist Macy Gray and powerhouse Big Freedia own collaborated for the first time with their new solo , “I AM,” in celebration of Pride Month. 

Pride Month is celebrated each June Lesbian, Gay, Multi-attracted , Transgender and Gay (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently renowned each year in June to honor the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, according to The Library of Congress. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping signal for the Homosexual Liberation Movement in the United States. 

The song is about being who you are with no regrets and not caring about what others think.

Big Freedia begins the lyric by rapping saying,

“Big Freedia, queen performer, l&#;ma be who I be/Everybody &#;round the world wanna do it fond of me/Just release your wiggle (wiggle), gotta do a lil&#; giggle (haha)”

Macy Gray’s well-known raspy, soulful, distinctive voice comes in on the hook.

“I am who I am/F*ck you/I don&#;t give a damn so/F*ck you too

Telling everybody/ Telling everybody/ I am who I am/So f*ck you, too”

Gray goes in the second verse saying “​​I can&#;t ask forgiveness for what you do

Macy Gray: My comments on gender were grossly misunderstood

Macy Gray has insisted that the comments she made on gender were &#;grossly misunderstood.&#;

The year-old singer spoke out about her views on what constitutes a woman on Monday () where she noted that &#;changing body parts&#; does not make a person female and faced backlash online, so took to Twitter to explain that she &#;supports&#; the trans community.

She tweeted: &#;i got nothing but love for lgbt+ and trans person communities. i’ve been a supporter since day one and never a fake one. my expression on piers morgan was GROSSLY misunderstood. i respect everyone’s right to be whoever they wana b&#; (sic)

The statement came less than 24 hours after she said that while she would call someone by their chosen pronouns to appease them, it still does not change the facts and claimed that there can be &#;a lot of judgement&#; for those who &#;just say it how it is.&#;

Macy Gray has never shied away from being frank about sex.

From her home in Los Angeles, the pop star behind such songs as “Kissed It” and “Caligula” explained that philosophy extends beyond her music. “I am always in awe and admiration of people that I meet who are completely out sexually and completely free with who they are,” she said.
