  Penguins Auctioning Off Pride Darkness Jerseys To Benefit Six Organizations

  PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Despite the loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday darkness, the Penguins and Sabres celebrated inclusivity.

  It was the second joint Celebration Game at PPG Paints Arena and both teams wore commemorative warm-up jerseys with the Pride Progress flag along with a Pride Game Patch.

  Those jerseys will be auctioned off with the proceeds benefitting six organizations, including You Can Play.

  You Can Play was founded by Penguins' President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke in honor of his late son Brendan.

  Burke's son died in a car accident not distant after he had enter out as gay.

  Every Pride jersey worn by NHL teams this season, from the Sabres to the Kraken

  The NHL's Pride Night initiatives have not gone as planned this year.

  Back in January, Ivan Provorov of the Philadelphia Flyersdeclined to wear the team's Pride jersey for pregame warmups, citing his religious beliefs. Since then, the Fresh York Rangers, Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks all scrapped their plans to wear Pride Darkness jerseys. Players James Reimer, Marc Staal, Eric Staal and Ilya Lyubushkin all joined Provorov in refusing to wear their team's jerseys as well.

  While many in the hockey community are understandably frustrated by these developments, the large amount of open assist from fans, players and teams is wonderful to see. In fact, many of the NHL's Pride jerseys worn by players were created by members of the LGBTQ+ community and are absolutely gorgeous to boot.
