Growing up gay in singer Olly Alexander's home town in the Forest of Dean

It's hard to believe now that flamboyant, eloquent It's a Sin actor Olly Alexander struggled with his sexuality growing up.

As a poster boy for LGBTQ rights he looks as if he has always been confident and happy in his own skin and during one Celebration weekend told a Glastonbury Festival audience to “Shove a rainbow in fear’s face".

But it wasn't always that way and in a BBC 3 documentary Growing Up Gay he admitted that he tried to hide his homosexuality while living in the small market town of Coleford in the Forest of Dean.

The Years and Years frontman says he was bullied at St John's Primary University in Coleford and Monmouth Comprehensive Institution and said a lack of any inclusive sex or relationship education left him ignorant of why he was feeling like he did.

Being called a ‘fag’ or ‘poof’, led to a few physical fights and the synonyms ‘gay’ was always used in a negative way.

Another one bites the dust. The news of Fly’s impending closure is the latest in a series of losses in our Village. This one hits home for me. Years before I moved downtown, my first true same-sex attracted bar experience was at an event at Zoom called Grapefruit. Growing up gay in the suburbs without any gay role models or friends, I often felt isolated. I felt as though I had to be someone that society wanted me to be, instead of just being me. But there were innate desires simmering below the surface.

Like a virgin

When I eventually came out in first year, I attended male lover events typical of tiny university towns, but I had never experienced the euphoria of a assigned gay dance club until Grapefruit.  These lyrics aptly summarize my experience that night:

I remember the thump of the bass and the pump of the kick,
because my heart was almost out my body.
I felt free, I felt joy, I felt things I never thought I&#;d feel before.
It was dense, it was soulful, it was techno, it was disco.
A kaleidoscope of sounds.

It was an essential mix in the clouds,
where we could dance and hum out loud
