When year-old Matt, from Wilmington, Delaware, arrived in Jordan last plummet, getting involved in a lgbtq+ scene was “not part of the plan.”
Then he discovered that the Middle East is a lot gayer than he thought.
It started in the steam room of the hotel where he worked out: twice he was propositioned by Arab guys who made hand gestures. Then Matt started going to expat parties, where he met gay staff from local embassies and UN offices.
Finally, he got on the internet.
“The gym is the tip of the iceberg,” he says. “The internet is the whole iceberg.”

Shortly after my plane took off the tarmac, I flipped open my replicate of Rough Guide to Jordan. I tried to get comfy in my seat — it would be 12 hours until I could be skipping across the sand in Amman.
I read through Rough Guide’s helpful notation for gay and lesbian travelers: “Homosexual conduct in personal between consulting adults is legal in Jordan, but social disapproval of an overtly gay lifestyle is strong . . . Amman has a tiny underground scene for queer men and lesbians, for the most part concealed to outsiders.”
Fast forward a few hours, and I’m lounging in a posh suite at the Four Seasons Hotel Amman (the city’s swankiest), flipping through Tinder, woofing on Scruff and saying hello to a legion of kind locals eager to chat with a foreigner favor me. I was in the city over the weekend and wanted to know where the local gays hang out when they want to socialize and have fun. I received a string of responses within minutes, all directing me to one little café in the heart of the city.
